The Standard Motor Company, like many other distinguished British Marques, hailed from the Midlands. Reginald Walter Maudslay, the Malborough College scholar, had formed the company in March 1903 in Coventry, by the end of the first year the minimal workforce (7 rising to 25) had produced 3 cars. These first model where named ‘Motor Victoria’ and boasted a single cylinder engine.

In the years that followed, subtle change and reinvention saw the Standard ranks grow and collaborations with various coachbuilders varied the brand further. 1936 was perhaps the busiest year for the company with a staggering 20 models on offer. This was also the year that the distinctive ‘Waterfall’ radiator was introduced.

This crisp example of the Standard Flying Eight was manufactured in 1939 but first registered on 1st January 1940. This model features 3 forward gears mated to a 1021 cc 4 cylinder side valve engine via a single dry plate clutch. The vehicle starts without fuss and progression is remarkably smooth with precise gearing and a reassuring tug from the engine. Even tight maneuvering is a cinch due to the diminutive form and excellent visibility of this little tourer. The fabric folding roof can be stowed away revealing yet more of the very stylish design. This is achieved by folding the rear backrest forward and simply lowering the whole hood in to the space behind. Several tools are fitted behind the folding bench on purpose built clamps, another clever innovation. The vehicle is supplied with lots of history and some photographic records. Included in the sale are several maintenance manuals including a ‘Standard Eight Instruction Book’. The rear pages are adorned with fascinating notes dating back to 1948 recording services and repairs.

These charming little cars are quite rare and seldom come on to the market. At the time of writing this we only know of one other for sale and that needs tidying unlike ours which is in 1st rate condition. Values are on the rise so surely now is a great time to buy.
