The iconic hexagonal badge has been with us since the mid 1920’s and evokes interest in car lovers the world over. MG’s history has been complicated with a series of successive mergers but its origins can be attributed to the design prowess of a Mr Cecil Kimber.

Cecil began working in sales for Morris but soon progressed to designing modified bodies for its chassis under the moniker ‘Morris Garages’ (‘MG’ for short).

Several models were produced but the first to be developed truly independently was the ‘MG18/80’ of 1924. MG created many beautiful and instantly recognizable cars over the years that followed including the wonderful ‘T –Type cars that carried the ‘Midget’ name long before the mid 60’s variants came along. It was in 1955 that the MG-A was launched signalling a new era of MG design.

The example here offered for sale was originally registered in 1958 and left the factory as a standard 1500, however many mechanical augmentations have elevated this handsome roadster in to a serious performance machine. The standard 1500 engine block remains but benefits from a rebuild that included the fitment of a MG-B cylinder head. Two fuel pumps feed the twin SU carbs to aid combustion and an up-rated radiator and front mounted oil cooler improve thermodynamics. The 4 speed manual gearbox has a wonderfully snappy change and the resulting torque is delivered to the rear wheel via a limited slip differential. Braking and suspension modifications have also been employed to improve handling and performance; full details of enhancements are documented in the history file that acompanies the sale.

This resulting drive is exhilarating with fantastic acceleration, precise steering, and confident breaking all complimented by the intoxicating sound of the high revving engine. Included in the sale is a fitted tonneau for the cockpit and a covered trailer to get you to those important race meets.
