A substantial, handsome, impressive and correct example, in wonderfully sound condition, with fabulous door fit, closing with a lovely ‘clunk’ like a railway carriage. The paintwork is very nice, the interior is original, and although showing its age is rather appealing, the cloth is the rear being an unusual patterned design. Correct, imposing Lucas R100 headlamps, centre spotlamp and trumpet horns, together with Ace 'Cornercroft' sidelights, twin mirrors, all very nicely chromed, give a very regal frontal aspect to the car, which has been with one family in the USA for 44 years, from 1971 to 2015, and has obviously been well cared-for during this time and previously. Running sweetly, and offered prepared, UK registered and MoT tested. Complete with a history file, original handbook with chassis number stamped in, and copies of original factory sales and construction records, which show the car as being issued with its guarantee on March 7th 1939.

Snippets: The Wealthy Widows of Scotland - Fyfe-Jamieson & Wallace

Mrs M. Fyfe-Jamieson was the wealthy widow of James Fleming Fyfe-Jamieson (1866/1929) a wealthy colliery owner whose business interests included petroleum, oil, iron, coal, Shipbuilding, railways with his wife’s family (nee Tod) being involved in Jute, shipbuilding, and the import/export trade. James Fyfe-Jamieson was a close personal friend of the politician Stanley Baldwin having attended the same private school and later university. When James Fyfe-Jamieson died his estate incurred death duties in excess of £420,000 – leaving a vast fortune to his widow who used £20,000 in order to fund the building of the Fyfe-Jamieson Maternity Hospital which opened in 1939 – the same year that she took delivery of WMB4. After Mrs. Fyfe-Jamieson’s death in 1945 the 2nd widowed owner of WMB4 was Mrs Helen Wallace of Auchinibert House, Killearn (designed in 1906 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh) & purchased in 1928 by John Innes who died before he took up residence. The estate of Auchinibert was inherited by his sister Elizabeth Fulton & her daughter Helen Wallace - both widows. Helen’s father died when she was just a few months old and her husband Duncan McNaughton Wallace had died in 1927 leaving Helen with a pair of teenage twin girls to raise. Her uncle, John Innes started his career as a charge clerk with P Henderson & Co in 1877, by 1887 he was partner and in 1894 he became head of the company – he was also involved in the Irrawaddy Flotilla Co, the Burmah Coil Co & the Glasgow Ship Owners Association. John Innes was a well known patron of the arts & his collection included works by McTaggart, Rembrandt, Whistler, Goya and Bejet. After Elizabeth Fulton’s death in 1935 her daughter Helen remained at Auchenibert until she died in 1959. We have managed to contact Helen’s grandson Neil who has memories of his grandmother & her various Rolls-Royce cars, Neil has written a very comprehensive biography of the Innes & Wallace family which mentions his great-uncle John Innes purchasing a 1911 Silver Ghost as a company car!
