Peerless Cars Ltd. was in business from 1957-1960. In this short amount of time they accomplished many things, won their class at LeMans, produced approximately 300 cars, and most certainly achieved milestones in GT car engineering. The car on offer through LBI is a 1958 Peerless GT, chassis # 00018, as featured in the most recent October issue of Hemmings Sports and Exotics. The 18th car produced of 250 2 Liter GT's, it left the factory as a BRG over Grey example and stayed in England for the first 13 years of its life, then owned by William Smith of Tuckway Cottage in Blackburn. Shortly after, in the mid 1970's, it made its way to the states, then imported and purchased by Bo Dannenberger. Here the car remained until 2007 when it's estimated third owner, Dan Rose, purchased the Peerless with much work in mind. Today the car is finished in its original colors and does show one light respray that was completed a very long time ago. The car gives off an essence of originality and patina that so many seek in a preservation class automobile. However, this example has received a very thorough mechanical sorting that equates to a very tasteful combination of preservation and usability.
Cosmetically this car should not be touched, as many efforts have been put forth to preserve it as you see it. Cracks in the paint, a chip here, a flaw there all make for a car with character beyond most. We believe this to be the most original example in existence, cosmetically. The interior is of the same quality, "just south of Patina" as quoted by Dan Rose, it shows well as an original and is still very usable and functional. The undercarriage shows a few spots in the chassis that have been tended to with metal replacement to ensure this car is up to date and totally rust free. The work was completed by Mark Macy and was completed to a very high standard. All instruments work correctly with no flaws, windows all the way around are clean and go up and down as expected. The front and rear window seals have been replaced to provide reliability to their function. Overall this is a car that has always been well kept and driven off an on over the years. It has arrived at its current cosmetic condition after years of storage, but also enjoyment.
Mechanically this car strives in offering a reliable performance based experience that really compliments the original qualities, it is very usable. From the radiator to the DeDion rear end, the entire car has been completely gone over by Triumph Specialist Mark Macy in Ohio. Brakes, suspension, all driveline components including engine, transmission etc... have all been taken apart inspected, rebuilt as needed, and photo documented. From this we have noticed it to be a mechanically superb example that holds 60 pounds of oil pressure, runs cool, and has an overdrive that works flawlessly. Finished off with a set of Black Dayton's wrapped in new Vredestein Tires.
Overall this car offers an exceptional opportunity to acquire a car that is long forgotten and very important to the history of the GT car. Combining originality with modern function, this 58' Peerless is a car of pedigree that will make an excellent addition to any collection or will please its new care taker for years to come.
Included in the sale is a fitted car cover, spare, hammer, a lot of documentation, and two keys.
