Originally bodied by Hooper as a ‘Torpedo’tourer, but later (presumably during WW2) carrying an ambulance body, followed by a two seat Drophead Coupe. In 1976, a new four door, four seat tourer body was constructed in New Zealand, possibly by Janes of Tauranga, this is the coachwork that is still with the car today, and in good condition. Has been with one owner since 1990, which is when the car returned to the UK. Features include Auster screen with 'wings', (which the main windscreen also has), twin spare wheels and a custom made rear mounted trunk. The car comes with a history file, which includes old MoT certificates, letters and invoices for work carried out, including the fitting of power assisted steering, which is still fitted and working well. Running nicely, offered serviced, prepared and MoT tested until March 2017.

Snippets: A Serial Phantom Owner

Frederick Newman Kidd (1870/1957) was the son of Charles Newman Kidd (1845/1917), owner of C. N. Kidd Steam Brewery of Dartford, Kent. In 1868 Charles Kidd leased Steam Brewery from William Miskin (in 1919 William’s grandson married Frederick’s youngest sister Constance Gwendolin), in due course Charles Snr purchased Steam Brewery from the Miskin family and traded under the name of Oak Brewery, which in due course was incorporated as C N Kidd & Son Ltd in 1920 by Frederick Kidd. Frederick’s younger brother Charles Bernard (1879/1966) listed his occupation was as “Master of Hounds” which included – West Kent Hounds (1909/12), Southdown Hounds (1912/18) (Oakley Hounds (1919/21) & North Cotswolds Hounds (1921/24). During the late 1920s / early 1930s Frederick Kidd owned several other Rolls-Royce Phantoms – 16SC, 64EH, 61NK, 15GX and 45TA, all from new! The Kidd siblings all did well for themselves with Fredrick & his cars, Charles (who married his 1st cousin Daisy Pine) with his horses and large houses (Warren House in Otford with 15 rooms), Winifrid Ruth who married William Cronk (land agent) they also lived in a large 13 room house with 5 servants, their only son William was killed at Ypres in 1914 aged just 21. Colin A Willeard has amassed a lot of information about the Kidd family with the intention of publishing a book about them. Within a year 3EF had been sold & was with D Dalrymple of Morshead House in Richmond Hill - named after Sir Frederick Morshead 1st Bart (1747/1813) Lord Warden of the Stanneries, a position that dates back to 1197 and still exists today enabling the holder exercise judicial & military functions in Cornwall (the last Stannary Parliament was convened in 1753). The 3rd owner of 3EF was A. E. Marne, a member of the Conservative Club at 74 St. James’ Street in London; 10 years later and 3EF is shown as being with Col H. Lawrence whose address of 1 Suffolk Street, Pall Mall is actually that of the United University Club whose membership was varied & included Politicians, Poets, Mountaineers & a Viceroy of India!
