SALE AGREED

A wonderfully correct and original D-back, undisturbed and very sound, just as we like them! The doors close with a fabulous ‘clunk’ just like a railway carriage of old. The car benefits from recent re-commissioning work a couple of years ago, including new tyres, exhaust system (including the 'hot spot' system), and more besides, and has covered about 1,500 trouble free miles since then, running nicely with no overheating problems, even in the recent hot weather, helped, no doubt, by the new cylinder head fitted in the 1990s. Attractive and well balanced in appearance, with respectable paintwork, original black leather to the front and beige cloth to the rear, six 'ace' wheel discs, including those fitted to the twin side-mounted spares, P100 headlights and a rear-mounted trunk. Also equipped with an impressive set of original tools in the trays fitted under the front seats, and comes with a array of paperwork, including an old buff logbook, letters, invoices, etc. All-in-all a very appealing car, in unspoilt, unmolested condition.

Chassis No. 140PY Reg. No. AV 6500

Snippets: The Jolly Uncle
Mjr Sir Alan McLean MP took delivery of 140PY at his London address of Wilfred Street, SW1 but later that year transferred the registered address to his Country House of Littlewood Park in Alford, Aberdeen. Due to the fact that he was MP for Norfolk (1923/9 & 1931/5) McLean could also count Burfield Hall, Norfolk as one of his homes. Littlewood Park was originally built as a shooting box for Lord Forbes & was rented by David McLean (1st manager of HSBC Bank in Shangai) from 1884 until it was purchased by his son Alan in the 1920s who then rebuilt Littlewood Park a few years later; due to the size of the property it was used as an Officers’ Hospital during WWI. In 1920 Alan McLean (aged 45) married Blodwen Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Rev Isaiah Jones, a Welsh Nonconformist minster. Alan & Blodwen had met during WWI whilst serving in the Army – their wedding was a grand affair at St Mary Abbots in Kensington – in the autobiography of Aileen Fox (Alan & Blodwen’s niece) life at Littlewood Park is described as being great fun – house parties, shooting parties, dinner parties & fishing parties. According to Aileen Fox her Uncle Alan was “quite jolly as an uncle & very good for presents at Christmas & birthdays”. Alan’s siblings included Colin (full of jokes), Isabel, the wife of Eric Hervey but she died young of TB and Alice (Aileen’s mother) who had married Walter Scott Henderson, a solicitor. Aileen must have been a favourite of her Uncle Alan as at her wedding in 1933 he provided Aileen with 12 of everything in glass – finger bowls, ice plates, champagne glasses etc. After Alan’s death in 1959 Lady Blodwen kept the car until 1961 when she sold it to a local car hire firm. In January 1968 140PY was sold for £525.00 to Peter Knighton of Newcastle - who after some minor work to the Phantom II used it for his wedding in August 1968. The Knightons had intended to tour Scotland in 140PY for their honeymoon but they got as far the Scottish border when the water boiled – they had to turn round and go back to Newcastle to change cars – relatives must have thought it was the shortest honeymoon on record!! They continued the honeymoon in their Fiat 500 and got to almost exactly the same spot when the rear axle shaft on the Fiat stripped its splines!! The Fiat managed to limp to the nearest motel and the next morning Peter was able to repair the Fiat enough for them to carry on their journey!
