1961 LHD Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II H. J. Mulliner Drophead.

A gorgeous example of a rare and very desirable, genuine H.J.Mulliner Drophead Coupe, which was the subject of a very comprehensive, frame up, 5,000 hour restoration in the 1990s, which involved a total strip of the entire car, with virtually every component either overhauled, refurbished or renewed. This is believed to have cost $380,000. The car is still in fabulous condition, and presents extremely well, even the underside being very impressive indeed. Very few of these cars were built, and even fewer were left hand drive, this particular car being delivered in the Spring of 1961 to New York, where it seems that it was shown at the Motor Show, shortly after arrival. It was delivered to its first owner in May 1961, and as far as we can tell, remained in New York for its whole life until this year, when we imported it to the UK. We are now preparing and servicing the car, it is offered MoT tested and UK registered, offering therefore, easy registration in any EEC country. A lovely car throughout, finished a vibrant shade of dark blue, with superb chrome-work, woodwork, etc, and very nicely trimmed in Connolly leather and topped with a black mohair power-operated hood. Complete with original toolkit and handbook, with the correct H.J. Mulliner supplement. There is a transcript of a description given of the restoration work carried out to LSXC173 on our website.

The 1st owner of LSXC173 was Dr William Maxwell Hitzig, a cardiovascular specialist – patients included Emperor Haile Selassie (Ethiopia), V. K. Krishna Menon (India), Milton Blackstone (Publicist to the Stars), Pearl Bailey (Singer/Actress), John Cazale (actor – Godfather/Deer Hunter & boyfriend of Meryl Streep). Dr Hitzig’s humanitarian work included caring for survivors of Nazi experiments and also treating victims who had been disfigured by the atomic bomb (he was given the key to Hiroshima City for this work). Dr Hitzig’s wife Candis was an early aviatrix & founder member of The Ninety-Nines (Nov 1929), named for the 99 licensed women pilots – fellow members included Amelia Earhart, Fay Gillis Wells, Ila Loetscher, Phyllis Fleet, Louise Thaden, Ruth Nichols, and Mildred Stinaff. Candis ( was one of the first female Limited Commercial Pilots but due to the Great Depression & a family of 7 children she gave up commercial flying. It is known that Dr. Hitzig kept LSCX173 until 1976 but it is not documented who owned the car between 1976/1989 when it is known to be with Elliot Stone, (companies include: Sorbee Int producers of sugar free candy; Medical Product Labs & West Coast Video) – in 1990 Elliot was dining out at Manayunk’s River Deck Cafe opening week (owned by Barry Geftman) when he complained about it taking 2 ½ hours for his starter to arrive at his table!. Geftman duly arranged for complimentary drinks etc, Stone became a regular client at The River Deck to the extent that in 1997 when he learnt that the restaurant was being sold he bought it from Geftman for a reputed $3.6million!! From 1993 to 1995 LSXC173 was with John Cory of Tenny Journal Printers, the firm is located at 1 Grand Central Place (previously the Lincoln Building) which was designed by J. E. R. Carpenter (1867/1932) who at the time was the leading architect of “sky-scrapers” in New York, one of his trademark was to “pair buildings” i.e. structures facing each other as on 93rd Street, 96th Street and 98th Street. In 1995 LSXC173 was acquired by John H. Van Merkensteijn (attorney) & his wife Elizabeth (television & film producer - Terror Firmer & The Rowdy Girls). Elizabeth’s father Paul P. Woolard served during WWII as an AAC Pilot in WWII & after the war was with Prince Matchabelli (Perfumes) where he became President (1957), in 1962 he joined Revlon Cosmetics & at his retirement in 1986 was President of Revlon Worldwide. The Merkensteijn family homes included an 11 bedroomed Mansion on Centre Island, NY which was bought by Rupert Murdoch in 2003 for $7.7m; the Merkensteijn’s “Town” home which they purchased in 1990 for $1.1m was in “The Beresford” (Built in 1929 & home to Glenn Close, John McEnroe & Richard Holbroke), the property boasts 10ft ceilings, parquet flooring and a 30x26ft library! In 2015, they moved to Riverside Boulevard (which their son found!) a 12 roomed apartment complete with private outdoor swimming pool for a $14m.
