A very clean, sound correct handsome and smart Landaulette, in excellent condition throughout, having been well cared-for by the last owner. Nicely painted in deep blue and black, with excellent, recent black leather to the front, beige Bedford Cord to the rear, lovely headlining, woodwork, carpets, etc. The rear opening roof has been properly re-covered with Black Japanned leather, and the whole car is very smartly presented. Structurally very sound and sturdy, the doors closing with a satisfying 'thunk', like a railway carriage door. Mechanically excellent too, with a smooth, quiet engine, new clutch, stainless exhaust, etc. A lovely example, which has been totally reliable in the hands of the last owner, who had the car for 26 years.

Chassis No. GRC77 Reg No. YJ 1661 Price £49,500

Snippets: Henderson:

Sir William Henderson CB (Kt 1921) took delivery of GRC77 at his home “West Park” on Perth Road, Dundee & on the chassis cards it is noted that he ordered his initials to be painted onto the rear doors in red! West Park was built in the 1860s for his father - Alexander Henderson a shipping merchant & manufacturer of Jute & Cloth. Alexander had 3 sons (William, Charles & Alexander) & 6 daughters – the marriage connections included the established “old” Scottish families the Balfours & the Ewings. William Henderson continued in the family business & expanded the company’s products into Linoleum Floorcloth & Finance; during the late 1920s William Henderson spent two months in Australia visiting politicians & likeminded businessmen. In 1938 there is a newspaper report stating that Sir Henderson sustained an injury to his nose whilst he was being driven in his car along the East Dock Street – perhaps this was GRC77? Sir William never married and as a consequence upon his death in 1940 West Park was inherited by his younger brother Charles who in 1943 gifted West Park to the college of Dundee. The 2nd owner of GRC77 was Norah Kathleen Clark (nee Clark!) of Ravelston, Blackhall, Norah’s husband James (1859/1915) was killed in 1915 during WWI . Both Norah & James’s family had obtained their wealth from the shipping industry as well as the thread & fabric industries – Paisley fabrics, J & P Coats, Clark Thread Company & the family firms merged into Coats & Clark. The Clark family connections by blood & marriage include the Royal photographer Cecil Beaton, the N. Ireland MP Sir Thomas Dixon, Royalty – Wallis Simpson wife of the Duke of Windsor, Law Sir Charles Frederick Gill (Crown Prosecutor In The Trial Of Oscar Wilde); Titled families – Guinness, Cowdray & Powis; Literature - Jane Austen.
