Rolls-Royce 20/25 (1933)

SALE AGREED A clean car, used since the mid 1990s for reliable wedding hire use, only now being available due to the previous owner’s retirement. Re-upholstered about twenty years ago in leather, dark blue to the front and cream to the rear, and the interior as a whole is in fine condition, including excellent headlining and carpets. Paintwork is of a similar age, and is showing signs of distress, but otherwise externally the car is good, including the impressive set of lamps & horns, part of which is the rare PLG40 centre lamp. Included in the history file is the original logbook from 1933 which shows the registration number to be PO 8621, and if you wish, we would be more than happy to help in the process of having this reinstated to replace the current number, which is a later issue. Running well and sensibly priced to allow for a certain amount of attention required.

The 1st owner was John Junius Morgan, an American born in Paris who considered himself an Englishman! J. J. Morgan was a nephew of John Pierpoint Morgan, the American Financier; the family connection is also complicated by the fact that J.J.’s mother Juliet and her sister Sarah married two brothers - John Brainard Morgan and George Hale Morgan, indeed the family tree shows that both sets of Morgan were 6th cousins once removed! In 1908 J. J. Morgan married Caroline McCook whose father John McCook was on the board of various Railroads, Banking and Finance companies; Caroline & J.J. had a son who sadly died in infancy to be followed a short while later by Caroline; J.J. Morgan never remarried & retired from his career on the London Stock Exchange to live for the remainder of his reclusive life at Nyetimber. J.J. Morgan had purchased Nyetimber shortly after WWI in 1919 & remained there until his death in 1949, when his will was read he left his chauffeur (Harry) all the cars & £1,000, his gardener was gifted with £1,000, and his faithful housekeeper £13,000, some furniture & his terrier ! The remainder of his assets were divided between his ward Alice Stubbings (whom he had brought back from Egypt in the 1920s) and Edwin Godson of Chelsea (long term friend & London Barrister). The 2nd owner of GGA73 was William McInnes (1868/1944) ship-owner and avid art collector. When William McInnes died in 1944 he left his entire collection of over 700 items to the City of Glasgow, this included artwork by Monet, Degas, Renoir, van Gogh, Picasso & Cezanne as well as works of silverware, pottery & glass by both known & unknown artists.
