Rolls-Royce 20/25 (1934)
A quite rare and very appealing coachwork configuration, with an opening roof over the driver’s compartment adding to the usability and attractiveness of the car, making this something of an eye-catcher. The car is smartly finished in black & ivory with black/blue leather interior front & rear, a full set of Ace wheel discs and a nice rear-mounted trunk with three fitted suitcases. Nice internal woodwork, a set of correct instruments in good condition and working trafficators set in the rear quarters completes the picture. A charming car, running nicely with a healthy engine which pulls very well on the road.

Snippets: Scrutton’s Shipping
In February 1934 GUB17 was delivered to James Herbert Scrutton (1858/1938) a scion of the Scrutton international shipping & law family. When he was 17 James joined the family firm & by 1884 (aged 26) he had become a partner as had his cousin Frederic. These two young gentlemen saw the firm move from sail to steam & established the firm of Scruttons Ltd. From 1922/1925 James Scrutton was Chairman of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping & during his time on the board saw the introduction of the “Rules for the Construction & Classification of Steel Ships” amongst other legislation, due to his ill health he retired in 1925. By 1890 some 30 vessels had passed through the firm’s hands including the intriguingly named vessels of Spheroid, Montrose, Naparima, Merle, Trinidad & Mignonette which the artist Samuel Walters (1811/82) painted portraits of. James married Edith Mary MacKinnon (her father Duncan was also a member of Lloyds) & they had two sons & two daughters; their eldest son Geoffrey served with the RFA during WWI & was mentioned in despatches for his bravery at Carnoy, during WWII their youngest son Christopher served with the RAF & was lost at sea in May 1940. The family home of Daglingworth Manor was used during WWII for evacuees & was managed by Edith & her daughter Joan. In the 1950s the estate of Daglingworth was purchased by the Duchy of Cornwall.
