Bentley 4.25-Litre (1936)

A very handsome, well constructed, four seat, two door open tourer, with broad ‘cutaway’ doors, giving an excellent place to rest your arm! The coachwork was built in the 1980s by Leyshon-James, to a high standard, is in good, substantial condition, and is a very accurate reproduction of a particularly attractive Vanden Plas design of the 1930s, with low roofline, swage lines to the wings, and very nicely proportioned from all angles. The car is in good order, nicely upholstered in blue leather, driving well, and comes complete with a good quality hood, hood bag and tonneau cover. Very stylish! Just returned from the USA, where the car has lived for the last thirty years, now back on its original UK registration number, offered prepared, serviced, fitted with five new tyres and MoT tested until November 2016.

The 1st owner of B170GA was David Eccles – (a descendant of John McAdam, the road builder) - book collector, politician, author & company director. His home in 1936 was that of 20 Montagu St, W1 which he shared with his glamorous wife Sybil (daughter of Bertram Dawson, physician to 4 Kings - Edward VII & VIII, George V & VI) and their 3 children. Residents of Montagu Street included S. H. Whitbread (brewing), 2nd Earl of Cromer (Barings Bank), 5th Earl Lucan (Grandfather of the notorious Lord Lucan), Col Stern (botanist), 3rd Baron O’Neill, Smith (Samuel Smith & Co Bank), politicians & several widows of the nobility – Dowager Countess of Jersey & Countess of Mayo. According to the chassis cards in 1951 B170GA was with Mr. Vasey-Ash of Ravens Craig Manor in Middlewich, Cheshire – this building dates from 1907 but little can be found about the property or the family. The area around Middlewich is famous for its salt – it was one of the Roman’s major salt sites & was known by them as Salinae, it is thought that the word Salary is derived from Salt as part of a soldier’s salary was an allowance for the purchase of salt which was an expensive item hence the phrase “being worth one’s salt”!
