Having just returned from California where it won ‘Best in Show’ at Pebble Beach in 1967 and again in 1975, as well as many other awards, this car is a fabulous example, being very sound, smart, sharp and particularly attractive in design, with stylish wings, cutaway rear wheel spats, lovely ‘pinched in’ running boards, and generally very elegant in design. The black and blue/grey paintwork is excellent, as is the chrome plating, and the interior is nicely upholstered in grey cloth throughout. A particularly unusual and appealing feature is the fitment of triple 'Plexiglass' roof panels, two to the front, just above the windscreen, and one large one further back, all with sliding internal panels. The engine is fabulous, being quiet and smooth with no overheating issues, and the whole car is just lovely throughout, ideal to use and enjoy. Indeed, the owner of the last 22 years toured the Southern States in temperatures of up to 110 deg f, with no issues. Comes with an impressive tool kit, a considerable history file, and we have just been successful in re-instating the car's original registration number, EYY 333. For fascinating Pathe News footage from 1960 showing the car in the hands of its then owner, Wing Commander Wallis, please click on the image above.

Snippets: Baronets, Bags & Bond.
In 1938 3CM65 was purchased by Thomas Spencer Maryon-Wilson heir to the 11th Baronet Sir Spencer Pocklington Maryon-Wilson. The 1st Baronet was William Wilson who was created Baronet in 1660 with the title “Willelmus Wilson de Eastbourne; Wilson Baronets had positions as Master of Horse to Earl of Suffolk, Cornet in the Royal Horse Guards, MP; the surname Maryon was added by the 7th Baronet but only hyphenated by the 11th Baronet. Thomas Maryon-Wilson died in 1938 pre-deceasing his father by 6 years, the line was inherited by a cousin Rev George Maryon-Wilson & title died out in 1978 with the death of Sir Hubert Maryon-Wilson in 1978. The 2nd owner of 3CM65 was Harry Frederick Gatward, in the 1950s & 60s he filed several patents for improvements to handles on carrier bags made from paper or cardboard, the Gatward family later went on to expand their printed paper-bag company with the formation of Coloroll Wallpaper. By the mid 1950s 3CM65 was with Squadron Leader Ken Wallis, flyer, engineer, inventor & stuntman. In the 1950s Ken Wallis was stationed in America and took with him his Rolls-Royce special (which he had constructed from aircraft bits) known as “Long Dog”. When Ken Wallis was in America (on secondment from the RAF) he raced hydroplanes and in 1956 he won the 56 mile Missouri Marathon. One item he is perhaps best remembered for is “Little Nelly”, an autogyro; this was used in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice with Ken Wallis standing in for Sean Connery during the flights. In early 1960 the Phantom III was with Ralph & Martha Shermund in Hillsborough, California but sadly Ralph died in the late 1970s. In 1980 Martha remarried to a Joseph Spranza & 3CM65 became part of Martha’s new family again based in Hillsborough.
