1939 Oldsmobile Series 60 Business Roadster.
A rare Oldsmobile produced in South Australia, the only one left of 5 produced. In the early 1900's General Motors, Holden, Australia used to assemble all the G.M USA cars in Australia. - Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, La Salle and Cadillac. The vehicles were sent to Australia as rolling chassis' :- (front panels, chassis and engines) GM Australia then produced the bodies, trim and assembled the complete vehicle. These cars therefore were Australian bodied. This make them now very Rare on the world market today, as they were only produced in small numbers compared to the mass production in the USA and Canada for the same eras. GM produced an Oldsmobile Roadster here in 1934 and 1935, none in 1936, 1937 and 1938. In 1939 they produced only 33 roadsters, 23 were eight cylinder models (for export only) and ten Series 60 models. (Five Sports Roadsters with rumble or dickey seats and five Business Roadsters with the large boot lid.) This car is the only remaining Oldsmobile Series 60 Business Roadster, out of the five produced and is body Number 2. This car is so rare even in this country, that it doesn't even appear in the original sales brochure of which we have a copy. There are photocopies of some pages of a diary from a young factory worker at GM at the time these cars were produced. (1939) He actually mentions these unusual Oldsmobile Roadsters coming down the production line, and that they are only making ten of them as a trial to see how the public would respond, as there was already a 1939 Chevrolet Roadster being produced at a lower cost. These ones were going to cost an extra 80 pounds ($160), which in 1939 was a lot of money. It is believed that GM Australia was to produce more, but in 1939 WW2 broke out and all production was switched to the War effort. This Oldsmobile Roadster has been fully restored within the last decade. The interior is ' beautiful beige leather ', not vinyl. No hoodbows but two period metal hoodmechanisms are there that will need to be slightly modified to fit the Olds. The engine runs very smoothly and the car handles very nicely with sufficient power from the 3.5 liter 6 cylinder engine. DVD available. The car was only used in dry conditions when out on the road and for the last four years has been on display only at the famous Australian car museum "The Birdswood Motor Museum."
