A good looking, spacious car, in very sound condition, with a particularly appealing, original brown leather interior. Fitted in the 1990s with a 6½ litre, straight eight Rolls-Royce B81 engine, this being a powerful, practical and sensible replacement for the original V12, and at one time a popular conversion for these cars, due to reliability, ease of maintenance, and availability of parts. Has been in storage for a good part of the last few decades, and will be re-commissioned prior to sale, and offered, prepared, ready to use and newly MoT tested.

Snippets: The Engineers

William Fielden was an engineer & Manager for Salisbury Gas Works in Dorset from 1915 to 1941, having left his previous employers Staines & Egham Gas Co where he had also acted as engineer & manager (1902 to 1915). During the miner’s strike in 1921, which lasted for 3 months, William Fielden decided that at all costs supplies to his customers should be upheld; at one stage during the strike period there was coal in the hoppers but nowhere else on the gas works. In 1926 William Fielden was elected a Director of Wilts & Dorset Motor Services Ltd whilst still with Salisbury Gas Works. Wilts & Dorset Motors Services was started in 1915 by Edwin Coombes who ran a bus service between Amesbury & Salisbury using a locally built bus, he was bought out that same year by Alfred Cannon & Alfred Mackenzie of Southdown Motor Services. William Fielden’s homes included Harnham House, The Laurels and Watersmeet – so named due to the fact that it is where the East Lyn & the Hoar Oak Rivers meet which then meet the West Lyn River at Lynmouth & thence to the Bristol Channel. William Fielden disposed of 3DL28 in 1950 to Dennis Ziani de Ferranti – his father Dr Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti was the founder of the electrical engineering company which supplied radar and targeting systems for the Harrier & Tornado jets. Dennis & his brother Vincent started their own firms of Dennis Ferranti Meters Ltd and Ferranti Ltd respectively.
