Jaguar XJ40 (1990)
First registered to Chasseur Developments of Iver Buckinghamshire in December 1990 (H Reg) this is one of 43 highly regarded conversions carried out by this innovative company using, what was in its day, contemporary aviation technology to put the XJ40 into the super-car league, at a cost of some £18,750 over the standard XJ40.
The conversion includes: Replacement body coloured bumper skins, a six piece front spoiler and side skirts covers all constructed in extremely strong fire resistant coremat resin sandwich, these are not just cosmetic enhancements they all reduce high speed lift and increase torsional rigidity; whilst under the entire rear of the car is one large inverted wing to create more down force. The suspension has shorter length springs front and rear with manually adjustable shock absorbers, the rear suspension also incorporates ride height adjustment. The steering system is re-bushed and has a valve modification to reduce the servo assistance to the steering.
The engine is highly modified by Turbo Technics with, the after the replacement of the pistons to Jaguars US specification to reduce peak cylinder pressures, the addition of two Garrett T25 Watercooled Turbo Chargers, providing it is claimed a 90 bhp increase to 310 bhp. The turbos are mounted on a new high nickel content iron manifold. The straight-through stainless steel exhaust system has been specially designed for the Stealth by Piper Developments of Devon to give maximum ground clearance.
This particular 4 litre example was, we are advised, exported to Japan shortly after completion where it was run and looked after by just one enthusiastic owner. Its very good overall condition supports the statement that this is a very good example of a rare motor car. The "Stealth Chasseur" has deservedly earned its place as a desirable and highly collectable Jaguar that is easily capable of giving a Bentley Turbo R a run for its money away from the lights.
There may only now be less than 30 of these cars remaining world wide; much rarer than a Lotus Carlton and right now almost half the price, but we suspect this will not be the case for much longer.
