Bentley S1 (1956)

A good, sound and smart example of the rare and sought after James Young ‘B10’ design, considered by many to be particularly attractive. A few of them, including this one, have small fins to the rear wings, a particularly appealing design feature. The car is sound, nicely painted in a lovely shade of blue, with excellent chrome work, and recently upholstered in cream leather with blue piping and very nice internal veneers. The engine was rebuilt a few years ago, and runs very nicely. Comes with a file of maintenance and repair history, showing caring owners. In good running order, driving nicely, and despite being an early car, is fitted with power steering, which greatly enhances its usability. Smartly presented, and offered serviced, ready to go.

James Young produced just 26 of the B10 design on the S1 (B = Bentley, 10 = 4-door saloon) with their distinctive square push buttons on the door handles, some of the B10 designed cars had discreet fins on the top of the rear wings. James Young also produced 24 cars to this design for Rolls-Royce on the Silver Cloud (called the SC10 design). Wealthy & discerning owners of cars with the B10 coachwork included – Arthur Holmes (from 1948/1966 he owned a total of 28 Rolls-Royce & Bentley cars!), Sir Ivan Arthur Rice Stedeford, industrialist & philanthropist, Andre Fluckiger (Swiss banker), Sir Bernard Docker (Daimler & BSA) and Sir William John Herbert de Wette Mullens. Owners of B470AN include Major Peter Holdsworth-Hunt MC of Tanfield Place nr Guildford, earlier occupants of Tanfield include the Count & Countess of Onslow (Politician & landowner), the Flemings (Merchants, Surgeons & Burmese Businessmen) and Capt Arthur R. T. Chilton & family (Royal Bengal Artillery & Insurance/Finance). After just two years B470AN moved to Nottingham to be with P. Rhodes of Arthur Richardson & Son Ltd – the firm where established in 1847 by the Richardson family as wholesale grocers, importers and tea merchants – Arthur Richardson (1860/1936) sat in the House of Commons as Liberal-Labour MP between 1906-1918 after which time he became Head of the company. From 1967 – 1979 it is not confirmed who owned B470AN but from 1979 – 1989 the car was with Charles Fradley of Crewe.
