Bentley Continental R (1993)
Since 1921, the Bentley name has remained synonymous with prestige, performance and luxury. The 'Continental' designation recalls the Bentley Continental of the post-war period and evokes those heady days of relaxed touring across the European continent, en route St Moritz or St Tropez. The 'R' resonates to the R-Type Bentleys from the 1950s as well as the Turbo R of the 1980s. Bentley's 1980s resurgence relied exclusively on models whose basic architecture was shared with other Rolls-Royce models.
However; the Bentley Continental R was unique to the Bentley marque. Despite the need to incorporate non-traditional features such as doors recessed into the roof, the result looked every bit a Bentley, albeit one re-stated for the 1990s. The 6.75 L Garrett-turbocharged engine from the Bentley Turbo R was chosen for use in the Continental R. In early cars (1991 - 1993) power output of 325 bhp at 4000rpm was always estimated, as, at that time, Rolls-Royce still had a policy of not supplying official figures, preferring to describe simply as "adequate" or "sufficient". Motoring press tests stated the top speed was at least 145 mph with a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds. The car used the new 4-speed GM 4L80-E automatic transmission and featured self levelling hydraulic suspension (adaptive ride/Automatic Ride Control), ventilated disc brakes at the front, with twin calipers. Engine management was provided via the MK-Motronic digital fuel injection with fully mapped ignition control system.
Presented in Georgian Silver with opulent Ivory and Royal Blue leather interior, Royal Blue carpets with Lambswool over-mats this outstanding example spent its early years in the Channel Islands where it recorded between 10,000 and 12,000 miles according to its service history with St Peter Port Garages, the Bentley distributor for Guernsey at the time. A further twelve service interventions are noted in the book the last at 66,000 miles. The history file also contains a collection of bills substantiating the careful ownership and supporting the 68,000 miles recorded which is believed correct; this Bentley is in superb condition throughout.
